JEPSON, ANDREWS and MORLEY

and associated familes of Nottinghamshire

Charles Jepson (1.1)

Charles was born 1753 in Lincoln, son of William and Rebecca Jepson (nee Yorke), his father being a schoolmaster at the Cathedral Close there. He trained as a surgeon, and was married at Grantham 1nd December 1775 to Mary Andrews. Mary herself was from Grantham, the daughter of John and Martha (nee Huckerby), who had been married at St Nicholas' Church, Nottingham, 16th October 1739 (the licence reading: John Andrews of Grantham, co. Linc, baker, aged 27, bachelor, and Martha Huckerby of Gunthorpe, par. Lowdham, aged 20, spinster).

Charles and Mary moved to Bingham in Nottinghamshire, where Charles practised as a surgeon, and had four children:

Charles was buried at Bingham 11th September 1807, and his widow, Mary on 15th Mar 1820, aged 64 years.

A year before Charles' burial, on 4th June 1806, the burial is recorded of one Henry Andrews "a bachelor and gentleman", who could have been a brother to Mary. It is thought likely that this is the same Henry Andrews who rose to fame as an astronomer at that time, the supporting evidence being:

Catherine was Charles (1.1) & Mary's only surviving daughter, and was baptised at Bingham 12th May 1782. She was married 14th April 1805 at St Peter's Church, Nottingham, to William Morley. The following year, as Catherine's uncle, Henry Andrews (see above) came to the close of his life, the couple had their first child baptised at St Peter's - Henry Andrews Morley (3.1) - on 30th April 1806. Whether the child survived infancy and was baptised twice, or whether he died and a second child was baptised with the same name, is not known (no intervening burial has been found), but an identical baptism entry can be found in the registers at Bingham on 25th November of the same year.

Further children of William and Catherine have been identified:

William worked as a framework knitter and lace maker, living in Parliament Street in 1814, and Rutland Street in 1820 (both close to the centre of Nottingham). By 1841, the family had moved to Radford, just outside the city. William died shortly afterwards at the age of 62, and was buried at St Nicholas' Church, Nottingham 1st December 1844.
