This is a list of Methodist Records held at the Nottinghamshire Archive Office as of January 1997.
Methodist churches are grouped together into 'circuits', which do not cover the same area as a Church of England parish. Many villages did not contain a Methodist church, so people of that pursuasion would travel to a nearby village in order to worship. Over the years, particularly following the unions of 1907 and 1932, churches have often been moved from one circuit to another.
Following the deaths Charles Wesley (1788) and John Wesley (1791) the Methodist movement grew, and changed tremendously, resulting in various divisions, the main ones of which are as follows:
Methodist New Connection (MNC), founded in 1797
Primitive Methodists (PM), founded in 1812, known also as"Independent" or "Quaker" Methodists
Wesleyan Methodists (WM), founded in 1836
United Methodist Free Church (UMF), founded in 1857
In 1907 the Methodist New Connection and the United Methodist Free Church combined to form the United Methodist Church (UMC), and this in turn joined the Wesleyan Methodists and Primitive Methodists in 1932 to form the Methodist Church (M). Many individual churches retained their historical division name after this union. The Wesley Reform Union (WRU) and the Independent Methodists (IM) remain separate from the main Methodist Church.
